A spare motorcycle key is simplest to make while one working key still exists. Bring that key and the bike's details when you book.

The easiest time to get a spare motorcycle key is while you still have one that works. A copy is usually a simpler job than making a key with no original. Before you book, check whether your key has a chip and have proof of ownership ready. A1 All Locksmith DMV copies motorcycle keys as part of its mobile key service in Gaithersburg and nearby Montgomery County communities.

Call 240-701-6448 with the make, model and year of the motorcycle to check the price and availability.

Copy a working key, or make one with no original?

These are two different jobs, and the price follows the difference:

Your situation What the job involves What to ask
One working key, no spare Cutting a copy, plus programming if the key has a chip Does my model need programming? Is it included?
Worn key that still works Cutting to the lock’s original code instead of copying the wear Can you decode the lock so the copy fits correctly?
No working key at all Making a key from the lock or the code, plus programming if needed Can you support my model on site? What proof do you need?

A1’s key duplication service lists motorcycle keys, keys cut to code when no original exists and decoding a worn lock so the new key is cut correctly. Compatibility still has to be confirmed for your specific motorcycle.

Does your motorcycle key have a chip?

Many newer motorcycles use an immobilizer, like cars do. A key with a chip may need to be cut and registered to the motorcycle before it will start it. A plain metal copy might turn the ignition without starting the engine.

If you are not sure, check the owner’s manual for an immobilizer section, or tell the locksmith the exact model and year. Do not buy a blank online and assume it will work. A blank with the wrong chip or profile can mean a wasted visit.

What to bring

  • The working key, if you have one. It is the starting point for a copy.
  • Photo ID and registration or title for the motorcycle. A1 checks ownership before making keys for any vehicle.
  • Make, model and year, and the VIN if you can read it.
  • Where the motorcycle is: home garage, parking garage level, or workplace lot. A1 is mobile and does not have a walk-in shop.

Older vehicles with plain metal keys follow the same logic: a working key makes the copy simpler, and ownership is checked first.

Older bikes and vehicles with metal keys

Some older motorcycles, and older cars and trucks, use mechanical keys with no chip. A copy then depends on cutting accuracy, not programming. A worn original can produce a worn copy, so ask whether the key can be cut to the lock’s code instead.

The same applies if the ignition, fuel cap and seat lock use one key. Mention every lock the key must open, so the copy is tested in each of them.

Questions to ask before booking

  1. Do you support my motorcycle’s make, model and year?
  2. Does the key need programming, and is it included in the price?
  3. What is the total for the number of copies I want?
  4. What proof of ownership do you need?
  5. Will you test the copy in the ignition and the other locks before I pay?

Ask for the current arrival estimate separately from the price.

Common questions

How much does a motorcycle key copy cost?

It depends on whether the key has a chip, how many copies you want and whether a working original exists. Copying a working key is generally the least expensive version. Call with your model for a price before dispatch.

Can you come to my garage?

A1 works as a mobile locksmith and comes to the motorcycle. Confirm that your location is covered when you call.

I lost my only motorcycle key. Can you still help?

Ask about your specific model. Making a key with no original is a different, usually more expensive job, and support depends on the motorcycle. For cars, see our guide to lost car keys with no spare.

Is a copy enough if my car key has a chip?

Not always. Our guide to spare car keys with chips explains why a copy may also need programming.
